Hi I’m Anxious - Over-functioning, anxiety management, high achieving women, anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism

Welcome to “Hi I’m Anxious.” Are you an over-functioning, high-achieving, over-thinking perfectionist but an amazing woman who also suffers incessantly with anxiety? You are not alone. Hi I’m Katy Dahl and I am an HR professional, business owner, entrepreneur, wife, and mom and I have suffered from anxiety for what seems like forever. For as long as I can remember, anxiety has been part of my life. It’s the ugly little friend that rears its head at the time that is most inconvenient… when I want to be most present with my family, at the high pressure business meeting, when I am awake in bed at night worrying instead of sleeping. Anxiety has crept into otherwise perfect moments in my life and stolen that joy from me. l I was recently diagnosed with anxiety and I found that there were some tools for managing it. I don’t think I’ll ever be free from anxiety, but now I am equipped to overcome it and enjoy life despite it. Together, on this podcast, we’re going to work through mind management, physical health, and getting the support we need. We’re going to hear from experts, therapists, and psychologists, and we’re going to dive into the tools you can use so you can go from “Hi I’m Anxious” to “Hi I’m way less anxious.” So put down that third cup of coffee, swap it for some lemon water, we’re about to get this thing under control. A lot of what I share has to do with mindset and things you can DO.  But lately I’ve been thinking a lot about things we don’t do.  And how important it can be to focus on what you aren’t doing in order to help yourself feel your best, achieve your goals, and live the life you want to be living.

How often do you find yourself scouring the internet for tips, tricks, hacks, strategies, etc. for how to DO things?

For the most part, I think it’s helpful to think of what we do or how we think in terms of the positive.  Focusing positively on what I do want v what I don’t want.  Or focusing on what you can control v what you can’t.  But, there is a lot of value in thinking about what you don’t do.

I hope this episode helps you, friend!

Wishing you freedom to live the life you want, despite anxiety,

Katy

36. Lies Anxiety Tells Me

Monday Feb 27, 2023

Monday Feb 27, 2023

Anxiety is such a liar.  Anxiety often lies to me.  It will encourage me to think thoughts that simply aren’t true.

Thoughts aren’t facts.  But some thoughts can be so far from fact, and not based in fact, that I feel like I can classify them as lies.

And these thoughts, or lies, can cause you to feel additional anxiety.  Which exacerbates a spiral of continued anxiety. But if you can catch these thoughts, you can start to choose to think thoughts that better serve you.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is the ability to receive

Something I’ve noticed in common among Anxious high achievers, especially women, is the difficulty we have in allowing ourselves to receive.

Are you able to receive?  Are you able to receive help?  Are you able to receive compliments?  Are you able to receive love?

I’ve been thinking about how not receiving contributes to anxiety.  So in today’s episode, I want to share how receiving has helped with my anxiety, and maybe it will help you too.

I hope this episode helps you, friend!

Do you catch yourself using control as a way to manage your anxiety?

Do you regularly pull out your beautiful planner, and spend time writing down unrealistic goals for yourself?
Do you set up your calendar with a schedule that is impossible to follow?
Do you create to-do lists that are totally impractical?
And then - do you shame or beat yourself up for not meeting your goals, following your calendar to the minute, or completing your to-do list?

As anxious high achievers, we’re hard on ourselves, right?

If you’re shaming or beating yourself up for not meeting your goals, following your calendar to the minute, or completing your to-do list - then my guess is that this self-flagellation is completely unwarranted, not to mention, unhelpful.

Beating yourself up is completely counterproductive, and I think deep down you know that, right?

So, instead, I’d like to offer you one strategy to try instead.

If this resonates with you, this episode is for you.

I hope this episode helps you, friend!

Wishing you freedom to live the life you want, despite anxiety,

Do you catch yourself using control as a way to manage your anxiety?

My anxious brain likes to tell me lies.  I catch all kinds of these lies like:
If I don’t do it, it won’t be done right.
I can’t ask for help because I should be able to handle this myself.
I’ll rest after I take care of everything on my to-do list.
If I give in to this person on this one thing, then they’ll run all over me all the time.

What happens next, anxious friend, after your anxious brain tells you lies like these?  Does it try to solve these problems, typically by offering use of unhelpful coping mechanisms, like controlling behavior?

If this resonates with you, this episode is for you.

I hope this episode helps you, friend!

Wishing you freedom to live the life you want, despite anxiety,
